From December 21 to 23rd, 2023, the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) and the Holy Spirit Sisters (SSpS) Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) partnered with the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom and the Ghana Fire Service in Donkorkrom to organize a fire volunteer training program for Afram Plains residents.

Forty participants from various Afram Plains communities registered for the program, which concluded with a graduation and commissioning ceremony at the Cathedral forecourt. Most Rev. John Alphonse Asiedu, SVD, the Bishop of Donkorkrom, graced the occasion, joined by the Provincial Fr. Cyprian Kuupol, SVD, and Sr. Mercy Benson SSpS, Congregational Leader.

The program aimed to equip community members with firefighting skills, which are crucial during the dry season when the fire risk is high. Participants were trained not only in managing bushfires but also in handling domestic fires. This initiative is particularly vital as many communities in Afram Plains are remote, making it challenging for the Ghana Fire Service to reach them promptly.

Certificates were awarded to participants as recognition for their involvement in the training. The event emphasized the importance of protecting the environment, aligning with Laudato Si’s principles, which encourage tree planting and environmental conservation.
