Visit of Bishops from Japan

Seventeen bishops, representing all 15 dioceses in Japan, embarked on a united journey to the Holy See (April 8–13, 2024). This regular meeting with the Pope and Vatican officials served as a platform for the bishops to report on their dioceses’ state and discuss various matters concerning the Church in their region. This significant opportunity not only strengthened their connection with the universal Church but also fostered a sense of shared purpose and unity among them.

As part of their regular visit, the bishops participated in a Mass in the crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican on the morning of April 12. Following this, they had the honor of meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican Palace. The Pope, known for his warm demeanor, greeted each of the Japanese bishops with genuine affection. In a relaxed setting, the Pope addressed the bishops for about an hour, sharing his thoughts and giving a heartfelt blessing.

After the ad limina visit, Archbishop Isao Kikuchi SVD of the Archdiocese of Tokyo and Bishop Daisuke Narui SVD of the Diocese of Niigata along with Archbishop Michiaki Nakamura of the Archdiocese of Nagasaki and Bishop Goro Matsuura of the Diocese of Nagoya, visited Collegio del Verbo Divino. Here, they shared a meal with the community, further fostering the spirit of unity and camaraderie.
