In a recent dialogue with Father Superior General, he delved into the essence of what propels the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) forward: formation. He explored how formation extends beyond mere education, shaping not only our individual identities as missionaries but also the collective character of our community. Yet, amid this acknowledgment of formation’s centrality, he confronted the different challenges that plagued our journey towards becoming faithful stewards of our mission.

The obstacles encountered in formation are as diverse as the world we live in. From grappling with the repercussions of pandemics and conflicts to confronting personal trials like addiction and grappling with complex matters such as understanding human sexuality, the terrain we tread is intricate and demanding. In our quest to prepare ourselves for the mission ahead, we must equip ourselves with the requisite skills and attitudes, all while remaining resolute in our vocation.

At the heart of the formation process lie our formators, serving as living channels of guidance and support for those undergoing formation. They cultivate an environment that nurtures holistic growth and fosters a sense of community. Moreover, recognizing the dynamic nature of their role, Father Budi acknowledges the importance of continual training and development for our formators, ensuring they are well-equipped to fulfill their responsibilities effectively.

Our discussion highlighted how essential it is to stay connected with what is happening in the world. Whether it is dealing with new tech stuff or talking about tricky social issues, being ready to engage with the world is key.

Father Budi talked about how digital tech is changing how we live. Instead of talking face-to-face, we are texting more and communicating via social media. This can make us less connected and more into our little bubbles. Unfortunately, some of our confreres are losing interest in reading, critical thinking, and having meaningful conversations. Instead, they are becoming increasingly immersed in the digital realm.

Simultaneously, Father Budi emphasized the necessity of fostering a culture of safety and support within our formation endeavors. Upholding the dignity and well-being of all those in formation, transparency and integrity must permeate every facet of the process, forging bonds of trust and empathy within our community.

Yet, our commitment extends beyond the confines of our institutions. We must embody the values and mission of the SVD in our interactions with the world, serving as examples of joy, openness, and dedication. Our parishes and institutions should reflect these values, attracting others to join us in our sacred mission.

In contemplating our role as witnesses to the Divine Word mission, we recognize the profound impact of our lives on those around us. Through our actions and attitudes, we sow the seeds of vocation, inspiring future generations of missionaries to heed the call.

To tackle these challenges, we are updating the Ratio Formationis Fundamentalis, a guide that will help us all agree on how we do formation in the SVD. But it is not just about following rules; we need to really live by the values in the guide. They should shape everything we do in formation and how we relate to the world.

As we envision the future of formation within the SVD, we strive for a community of missionaries characterized by open-mindedness, generosity, and a profound love for humanity. Grounded in a robust spirituality and fueled by commitment, these missionaries will traverse borders with joy and purpose, embodying the essence of our missionary calling.

As we stand on the brink of the 19th General Chapter, let us recognize the role of formation in shaping the destiny of the Divine Word mission. Let us pledge to actively engage in discussions, both formal and informal, that will shape the future course of our Society. Together, let us commit ourselves to the noble task of nurturing the heart of our mission, ensuring its continuity and vitality for generations to come.
